Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – The Port Moresby Archery Club proudly launched its inaugural youth beginners program, marking a significant milestone in the development of archery for young enthusiasts in the city. Held at the June Valley Shooting Range, the program saw four dedicated youths embark on a journey to master the basics of this timeless sport.
The participants included Hagen Nendepa, a Grade 9 student, Kalysta Hafmans, and Camarilla Ugava, both in Grade 10, and Ugava Tau, a Grade 8 student. All attendees are students at various schools within Port Moresby. Over the course of four Saturdays in April 2023, these young archers dedicated three hours each weekend to learn and practice under expert guidance.
The program carefully designed to prioritize safety, covering essential rules and the use of personal protective equipment. Participants were also introduced to the basic shooting steps and equipment safety, ensuring a solid foundation for their future in archery. The course, accredited by World Archery, underscores the club's commitment to adhering to international standards and best practices.
This groundbreaking initiative was led by Club officials, including Ms. Signe Dalsgaard, the PNG National Archery Team Coach, and Dr. Sereugava Ugava, a seasoned club archery instructor. Their combined expertise provided the young archers with a comprehensive and enriching learning experience.
"The introduction of this youth beginners’ program is a testament to our belief in nurturing the next generation of archers," said Ms. Dalsgaard. "By investing in our youth, we are securing the future of archery in Papua New Guinea."
The Port Moresby Archery Club's decision to focus on youth archery aligns with its vision to grow the sport at the grassroots level, ensuring that young talents have the opportunity to develop their skills and potentially represent the nation on an international stage.
As the first-ever youth beginners course, this program sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at fostering a love for archery among young students. The club looks forward to continuing its efforts in promoting the sport and providing more opportunities for youth engagement and development.
